How to: making additional prints at home with your custom block
THE REAL PRINTMAKING WAY
Grab yourself some block printing ink, a brayer (that's the fancy word for the little roller), and some paper.
I personally use Speedball products and love them, especially for beginners. Roll a thin layer of ink onto your brayer, roll it over the raised surface of your block, place your paper on top, apply even pressure, and peel it back.
Boom. You made a print.
THE EASY AND CHEAPER WAY
Honestly? Buy a large ink pad.
Press your block onto the ink pad, then stamp it onto paper. It's basically the world's most sentimental stamp.
Will it have the exact same look and texture as a traditional linocut print? Nope.
Will it be easy, inexpensive, and still really cool? Absolutely.
ANY TIPS FOR PRINTING MY CUSTOM BLOCK AT HOME?
• Don't use too much ink. More is not always better.
• Practice on scrap paper first.
• Different papers will give you different results. I like using the brand, Strathmore
• Your first print might be weird. That's normal.
• Every print will look a little different—and that's part of what makes printmaking fun.
Hang it somewhere you love. Make more prints. Try different colors. Make a mess.
